Hello, I’m Kurt.
I’m the Lead UI Designer at SmartRent focusing on the design system. On the design side, it’s primarily me, partnering closely with a small engineering team. Together, we collaborate widely to help streamline and standardize development and design across our various products.
Before this, I spent about 6 years designing products, after getting my start in graphic design and digital creation.

My Story
Growing up in interior Maine shaped my childhood with distinct seasons: summers spent outdoors fishing and swimming, and long, cold winters indoors occupied by video games and building with Legos – early hints of my interest in design and systems. After high school, I moved to the coast in Portland, first attending Southern Maine Community College for Communication and New Media, then transferring to the University of Southern Maine for a Media Studies degree. An internship at Portland Magazine was pivotal, offering my first real look at professional design and visual storytelling.
My career began in earnest at IDEXX, where I created digital content and honed my web design skills using HTML, CSS, and CMS platforms for PetHealthNetwork.com. Life took a significant turn after getting married; my wife was accepted into grad school in Phoenix, prompting our cross-country move. Soon after settling in, I joined RevolutionParts as a UX/UI Designer. This role truly ignited my passion for product design, as I focused on designing for their e-commerce platform and creating e-commerce stores specializing in OEM car part catalogs.
Eventually, my family made another move west, settling in North County San Diego. This move was prompted by a job offer from Antech Diagnostics, where I joined as a Senior UX/UI Designer, focusing on their point-of-care products and online platform for two years. Following that, for the past three-plus years, I’ve worked remotely as a Lead UI Designer for SmartRent, which, interestingly, is based back near Phoenix. In this role, I focus on leading the development and evolution of their design system, collaborating with teams to build consistent and efficient products, all while enjoying the California lifestyle.
When I'm Not Working
I have quite a few interests that keep me busy! I love staying active and enjoy skateboarding, boxing, Muay Thai, and strength training at my local gym. To unwind, I often turn to video games, especially JRPGs or Mario on my Switch or Steam Deck, or tap into my creative side by building Legos or doodling on my iPad – sometimes sharing the results on Dribbble.
Food is another passion; I’m always up for great coffee, ramen, sushi, and definitely the occasional breakfast burrito.
Most importantly, I cherish spending quality time with my wife and our two young daughters (ages 4 and 6).
